Building theSHFT
Willie Austin built theSHFT, a private messaging app, on his own. He started in December 2025, made his first commit on January 1, 2026, and put the app on the App Store on March 11, 2026. Here is how it looked and what changed, version by version.

From Hidden to theSHFT
The project began under a working name, Hidden. His second commit, on January 4, 2026, called it the Hidden MVP app, and the builds that month carried the name SHIFT. On January 23, 2026 the app took the name it still has: theSHFT.
The first versions lived up to the working name. theSHFT opened as a working calculator, and your PIN unlocked your messages. The welcome screen said it plainly: private messaging, hidden in plain sight.

MARCH 11, 2026 · VERSIONS 1.0 AND 1.5
The first looks
theSHFT 1.0 went live on the App Store on March 11, 2026: secure, private messaging where conversations disappear after they are read. It hid behind a working calculator, and a PIN opened your messages.
Version 1.5 followed on March 16 with fixes and small improvements.

MARCH 25, 2026 · VERSION 3.0
A fresh design
Two weeks after launch, 3.0 brought a cleaner, faster design with orange buttons. Disappearing timers now started when the other person opened your message, not when you sent it, and you could block someone without them ever knowing.
3.0.1, 3.0.2 and 3.0.3 followed between April 2 and April 10: sign up in three steps instead of five, messages that retry on their own after going offline, a live countdown on every timer, and more than a hundred security fixes and improvements.

APRIL 22, 2026 · VERSION 4.0
Calls and groups
4.0 added encrypted voice and video calls, group chats of up to 50 people, and voice memos that can disappear too. Messages started arriving in real time, every disappearing message got a live countdown, and Pro became a one time purchase instead of a subscription.

JUNE 30, 2026 · VERSION 9.0
Communities, stories and a new wordmark
Between 4.0 and 9.0, his own test builds ran from 4.1 through 7.3. When the next version reached the App Store, theSHFT had communities with live voice rooms, 24 hour Stories with text and drawing, and screenshot protection that tells the other person when one is taken. Direct messages gained an added post quantum layer of encryption.
The app now opened to its own PIN screen with a new wordmark. 9.0.1 followed on July 2 with bug fixes.

SEPTEMBER 8, 2026 · VERSION 9.3
Stories and a new mark
9.3 made Stories easier to flip through, let you turn a voice note into text on your own phone, and added chat wallpapers, undo send and group invite links. It also brought a new app icon: an orange arrow.
9.3.1 and 9.3.2 followed within the week. The arrow came to life on every unlock, disappearing messages were rebuilt around one rule (yours count down from when you send, theirs from when they read), and groups got stronger encryption, along with hold to record voice notes and full emoji reactions.
-
SEPTEMBER 16, 2026 · VERSION 9.4
Messaging, rebuilt for speed
9.4 rebuilt messaging so a burst of messages lands right away. Your disappearing messages now wait for the other person to open them before your own copy counts down, and three clear marks show sent, delivered and read. It also added a Home Screen widget, and as always, no message previews anywhere.
9.4 is the version on the App Store today.

NEXT · VERSION 9.5 COMING
SHFT, all through the app
9.5 is waiting for App Store review. It brings SHFT, the mascot Willie created in September, into every corner of the app: he celebrates your firsts with stars, wears the outfits you pick for your avatar, and lives on your Lock Screen and Home Screen. Screenshot protection becomes always on, every disappearing timer becomes free, and the app icon becomes SHFT's head.

NEXT COMING
Android and the web
theSHFT is coming to Android phones and to the browser.
From a wordmark to SHFT
theSHFT's app icon has changed twice. It launched with its name set in type. The 9.3 update in September 2026 replaced it with an orange arrow. On September 30, 2026, the day after he created SHFT, Willie redrew the icon as SHFT's head in the shape of a chat bubble.

theshft.app over time
The website grew with the app. Between September 29 and October 1, 2026, Willie redesigned it around SHFT and a friendlier, pop culture voice: what theSHFT does, in everyday words.
4,348 commits, month by month
Every change Willie saved to theSHFT's code, counted by month. September 2026, the month SHFT arrived, was the busiest by far. October counts its first seven days.
